Understanding Idioms Through Context

Feb 24, 2025

This past week was cold and icy… I think winter can be over now! Anyway, my husband also had some really busy days at work. In one of his text messages, he mentioned that he had "hit the ground running." My first reaction? Wait… did you fall on the ice? He laughed and said, No, it’s just an idiom! I figured it was an idiom, but I still wanted to make sure he was okay and hadn’t actually slipped and fallen.

That belief stayed with me until a turning point back in college as an undergraduate student. I s...

For many of us, this is that time of year when we sit down and start jotting down plans and goals for the year ahead. One of these days, I caught myself thinking about what I would like to improve in my English, and one of my goals for 2026 is to refine my speech so that the words fly off my tongue effor...
