The Goal I Failed to Reach this Year

This year, I decided to join the 1,000 Hours Outside challenge—a challenge where the goal is for parents and kids to spend 1,000 hours outside, preferably in nature... Pretty wild, huh? Initially, I thought it would be very difficult for me to complete the challenge because I live in a place where it’s cold for most of the year. What surprised me was that during the colder months, we actually spent more time outside than during the summer. Our summer was very humid and rainy, with lots of mosquitoes, which made it harder to enjoy being outdoors. Additionally, I ended up getting pregnant with our second son, and while being outside sometimes helped alleviate the nausea and other symptoms, there were many times when I couldn’t stay outside for long. Okay... but what does that have to do with fluency in English? Bear with me, I promise this will be insightful.

As a mom of two under three, I now crave any chance to do something that’s not changing diapers or reminding toddlers to go potty. While I usually do chores with the kids around, there's a part of our evening routine (e.g., r...
Chunking? Chunks of Language?
You are smart. In fact, you are brilliant. Your brain is amazing. As you read these words, your brain is predicting what word comes next with each word you read, what we call predictive processing. E.g., The cat climbed up the... tree? Did you think tree? Maybe? What’s also fascinating about your brain is that it’s always trying to process and store information as efficiently as possible. Say ...
