Subtitles are Good for You

Most language learners I know love watching TV shows and movies to improve their language skills. While I wouldn’t say that I'm obsessed with movies or TV shows (I’m more of a documentary kind of girl), I do remember feeling a twinge of guilt whenever I would watch with subtitles on. "If I keep using subtitles, will I ever be fluent? Am I truly learning if I listen to the characters and read the subtitles simultaneously?" These were some of the questions I wrestled with, and I bet you might have asked yourself the same thing. If you’ve been unsure about whether subtitles help or hinder your language learning journey, let me shed some light on what research says about their use. Shall we?
