Is Immersion the "secret" to fluency?

I look forward to doing house chores. I couldn’t have imagined saying this three years ago. Back then, chores were just... chores—something I had to do. So, what changed? As a mom of two under three, I now crave any chance to do something that’s not changing diapers or reminding toddlers to go potty. While I usually do chores with the kids around, there's a part of our evening routine (e.g., resetting the kitchen, folding laundry, doing dishes) that I get to do solo while my husband plays with them. That’s when I grab my AirPods and listen to a favorite podcast or audiobook.

The other night, while doing dishes, I listened to an incredible episode about a teacher’s experience in a short-term immersion program in Italy. Catherine, the host of my favorite English learning podcast Hear You Go, absolutely nailed it in this episode (click here to listen). As soon as it ended, I thought: I need to write about the power of immersion in my next newsletter!

E.g., The cat climbed up the... tree? Did you think tree? Maybe? What’s also fascinating about your brain is that it’s always trying to process and store information as efficiently as possible. Say ...
Do you have good memory?
Tell me your name, and I’ll probably ask you to repeat it a few more times. I know, sometimes this can be obnoxious, so I apologize if I ever do this to you. Unfortunately, I cannot remember a time when I could say I had “good short-term memory.” Growing up, I attended a school where tests were given at the end of class to check students’ understanding of the content that was just taught. Beli...
